This memorial to the discoverer of the voltaic pile (electric battery) after whom volts and voltage are named was commissioned by "the electrical students of England." Volta, the pioneer of electrochemistry who lived from 1745 to 1827, was the first to isolate methane and also did much important work with static electricity [GPL].
